Dermal Rolling/Collagen Induction Therapy

Posted on Saturday, 27 Oct 2012 03:22 PM by Administrator

Collagen Induction Therapy also known as Skin Needling

Dermapen Vertical Insertion Method

At Lauras Skin Management Salon we introduce the Derma Pen, a new skin needling technique with minimal pain and recovery time.

Skin needling has been around for a while as a collagen induction therapy and involves making ‘micro injuries' to the skin with very fine needles. These injuries prompt the skin to go into healing mode, which includes the release of collagen, elastin and the stimulation of new supporting skin cells, fibroblasts. This, in turn, reduces the signs of aging, like sagging, wrinkles, hollows and uneven skin tone.
As we age, the natural production of the skin's supporting cells, fibroblasts, and the skin's collagen and elastin, naturally diminish leading to wrinkles, sagging and hollows. Stimulating the skin to produce more fibroblasts, collagen and elastin is called collagen induction therapy and is used as an alternative to facelifts and other surgical anti aging interventions.

The purpose of the Dermapen is intended to stimulate the skin and helps with absorption EGF and active ingredients. Deliver rejuvenating topical serums and cocktails through thousands of fractional micro-channels with no pain or downtime.

DermaPen is much safer and effective in piercing the skin. It has a superior effect on collagen and elastin rejuvenation, direct active ingredients supply into deeper layers of the skin without epidermal damage.

DermaPen multi-speed piercing action allows the needles to puncture the skin layers at 90 degrees and increases the effectiveness of treatments by increasing absorption of products, on the other hand it reduces pain & downtime.

Before and After Results

DermaPen is as effective as ablative laser treatments, such as Fraxel, IPL, Laser resurfacing, chemical peel's The treatment prompts the natural release of the skin's collagen and elastin for amazing anti-aging benefits, all without surgery.

The Derma Pen takes collagen induction therapy to the next level, giving amazing results with less damage, and therefore less pain and recovery time.

Derma Pen's micro needles penetrate vertically and the automatic vibrating function of the Derma Pen increases the effectiveness of the treatment by increasing the absorption of serums, while reducing pain and discomfort.

What is Skin Needling ?

Skin Needling is a procedure that uses multiple needles - 0.25mm in diameter, to pierce the skin and create tiny injuries deep in the skin. These dermal injuries lead to new collagen formation via the normal skin repair mechanisms. Skin Needling also perforates and softens fibrous scar tissue enabling the deposition of new collagen. The new collagen fills depressed scars and wrinkles from the bottom up lifting the depression so they are level with the surrounding skin. This process takes 2-3 months to produce visible results and can also help thicken thin, crepey skin.

What can Skin Needling treat?

  • Acne Scarring
  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Sun-damaged skins
  • Thin, Crepey skin

Contra-indications (Reasons why Skin Needling may not be suitable for you)

  • Roaccutane use in the last 6 months
  • Dermatitis or infection in the area to be treated
  • Pregnancy
  • Keloid scars
  • Abnormal wound healing

How many sessions do I need?

Each skin responds differently and most skins will need multiple treatments at 8-12 week intervals, dependent on the initial condition being treated, and the desired outcome. This time frame allows us to see the maximum new collagen deposition and to assess the success of the treatment.
Please note: A very small number of skins will have a minimal response to needling

What does it feel like?

You may feel some pressure though you won't feel any pain due to the topical anaesthetic that is applied prior to your procedure.

How does my skin look after the treatment? (This will vary according to the size and strength of the area being treated)

  • Mild to moderate redness and sensitivity in the treated area lasting 12 to 48 hours
  • Mild to moderate swelling and possible bruising for 2-3 days
  • Dry and tight skin
  • Tiny crusted areas occur all over that feel slightly rough and give a tanned appearance
  • Varying amounts of flaking/peeling occur approximately 3 days after your treatment
  • Makeup is fine to use after 48hours, though just keeping the skin moist often looks better and assists in faster peeling time
  • After the skin has shed it has a healthy glow, feels softer, smoother and is more even in colour
  • It is important to protect the new skin from the sun by using a broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily

Potential complications

  • If the healing skin is incorrectly cared for it can prolong healing and possibly lead to infection or scarring
  • Possible herpes simplex outbreak if prone to cold sores
  • Hyperpigmentation (darker areas of pigment on the skin) lasting 1 to 12 months

Skin Preparation

Prior to having Skin Needling, we recommend that the skin is primed with active ingredients for at least two weeks prior to the treatment. This is to maximise treatment outcomes, assist in speeding the healing time and reduces the risk of post peel complications. A specific skin care regime will be recommended to you at your initial consultation.

Patient After-Care for Skin Needling

Now that you've had your first treatment, there are a few simple steps for after care that you will need to follow:
Avoid the use of moisturisers or lotions containing active ingredients such as retinol, glycolic acids, perfumes and colours. Please use the moisturiser supplied to you for 3-7 days or until your skin is no longer sensitive. Thereafter, continue with your usual moisturisers unless advised otherwise.
Your skin will be a little more sensitive to the sun so keep sun exposure to a minimum. Please wear a hat and sunscreen daily. This should be a regular routine for you anyway!

Slight crusting and/or scabbing in particular areas may develop. If so, please do not rub or pick the skin as this may lead to a scar.

How does Clinical Skin Needling work?

The Derma Pen penetrates the skin from 20 to 90 times per second with an adjustable speed, and from a .25mm to 2mm depth, depending on the area being treated. Skin Needling is a procedure to pierce the skin and create tiny injuries deep in the skin. These dermal injuries lead to new collagen formation via the normal skin repair mechanisms. Skin Needling also perforates and softens fibrous scar tissue enabling the deposition of new collagen. This process takes 2-3 months to produce visible results. This type of skin needling collagen induction therapy can be used for skin tightening, lifting and rejuvenation, acne scars and wound healing, improvement in wrinkles and fine lines and to minimize pore size

Collagen Induction

Collagen Induction procedure works by stimulating your own body's collagen. Your body will start to naturally regenerate the skin, working below the surface in the dermis. New skin cells are generated and blood supply is enhanced. It improves the thickness of the dermis as well as the epidermis. This in return improves skin texture and reduces wrinkles. It also has a positive effect on hyper-pigmentation as well as hypo-pigmentation, new collagen fibres, an improved blood supply and harmonise pigmentation. It will only take up to 6 weeks before visible signs of regeneration are seen and the process will continue over the following months, providing you with a gradual and long lasting enhancement.

Scar Reduction

Scar Reduction procedure works by releasing old fibrotic scar tissue deep within the skin. Scar tissue is what creates visible scars on the skin's surface. The treatment will repair the skin naturally, working below the surface in the dermis. This takes time as new collagen and elastin fibres are formed, softening scars, generating new skin cells and enhancing blood supply. Results can be seen within 6 weeks, and a total of 70-80% improvement of scars.

Who Will Benefit from Skin Needling?

  • Skin tightening, rejuvenation
  • Acne scar/chicken pox scar/ post surgery scars
  • Wrinkles & Fine lines
  • Minimize pore size
  • Stretch marks
  • Treating alopecia
  • Penetration of solutions
  • Wrinkles on chest/neck/hands

Is Clinical Skin Needling Safe?

No thermal heating is use to rejuvenate the skin, thus, it is safe to use on all skin types and colours. Best of all, there is no risk of post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation.
In compliance with Australian OHS standards, the micro needles are disposed immediately after each clinical treatment on each individual.

Are there any risks or side effects?

Immediately following a Clinical Skin Needling treatment, clients may experience either slightly reddened or swollen skin. It feels somewhat like a mild sunburn. This effect is very normal and will disappear shortly after. Damage to the skin is very rare. As the tiny pricking channels close within minutes, and the treatments are performed under clinical conditions, post-op infections are very unlikely.

Why do I need a consultation?

Consultations are conducted with clients before the treatment to:

  • Assess if the Clinical Skin Needling treatment is appropriate for you
  • Explain the Clinical Skin Needling process
  • Advise pre and post treatment care instructions
  • Advise the cost of treatment

Pre-Treatment Management

The skin should be assessed prior to the client's first treatment. The use of skin treatments and/or products both pre- and post-treatment will enhance the client's results dramatically. Prior to the first Dermal Needling, we recommend that the skin is primed with active ingredients for two weeks prior to the treatment. This is to maximise treatment outcomes, assist in speeding the healing time and reduces the risk of post peel complications. A specific skin care regime will be recommended to you at your initial consultation.

Post-Care for Dermal Needling

Avoid the use of moisturisers or lotions containing active ingredients such as retinol, glycolic acids, perfumes and colours. Please use the moisturiser supplied to you for 3-7 days or until your skin is no longer sensitive. Thereafter, continue with your usual moisturisers unless advised otherwise.
Your skin will be a little more sensitive to the sun so keep sun exposure to a minimum. Please wear a hat and sunscreen daily. This should be a regular routine for you anyway!
Apply foundation as you wish.
Slight crusting and/or scabbing in particular areas may develop. If so, please do not rub or pick the skin as this may lead to a scar.

Is Clinical Skin Needling treatments painful?

Tolerance levels vary for all. Topical anaesthetic creams are applied for individuals who wish to numb the skin pre treatment. You may feel some pressure but feel no pain due to the topical anaesthetic that is applied prior to your procedure. Skin Needling procedures have minimal ‘Down Time' and swelling, and most people return to work the following day.

How do I know if Clinical Skin Needling treatments are working for me?

You will see real results during your treatment course. Your skin may initially look red a couple days post treatment and then shortly after the redness will start to minimise. The results will become more impressive with each successive treatment. Your skin's overall texture and complexion will also improve throughout the treatment course.
Results may last for several years and Clinical Skin Needling will provide significant benefits to concerned skin. However due to a combination of factors such as life style and free radical damage, maintenance treatments may be recommended.

How many treatments will I need?

Each skin responds differently and most skins will need multiple treatments at 8-12 week intervals, dependent on the initial condition being treated, and the desired outcome. This time frame allows us to see the maximum new collagen deposition and to assess the success of the treatment.

For best results, on average we recommend completing 1 to 3 treatments. As the condition of skin and individual expectations will differ the number of treatments required may vary. During your consultation your Skin Therapist will discuss a personalised treatment plan for you.
Maintenance treatments may be recommended to be performed on the area for some clients based on the skin's colour, condition and personal lifestyle.

How do I know when to come in for my next treatment?

On average we recommend treating the area 6 weeks apart. Your individual progress will be assess throughout your treatment course, recommending the best time to return for your follow up treatment

How does my skin look after the treatment? (This will vary according to the size and strength of the area being treated)

  • Mild to moderate redness and sensitivity in the treated area lasting 12 to 48 hours

If experienced, inflammatory reaction of the skin is extremely short and fades significantly within hours from redness to pinkish (on average lasts 12 to 24 hours). In order to reduce visible redness, we recommend healing minerals, peptides or hyaluronic acid after the procedure, and to protect the skin with zinc based sunscreen. We also recommend the use of mineral make-up to assist healing; however make-up should be applied the day after.

Will my medication affect my treatment?

Certain medications may affect your Clinical Skin Needling treatment if they are photosensitive (such as Roaccutane and Retin A which can cause pigmentation). If you are taking any medications it is best to advise your Skin Therapist so that we can ensure the best possible treatment results for you. Depending on the medication course, we may suggest performing treatments at least 2 to 6 months after taken.
